Adding Social networks buttons to wordpress.com posts

Filed under: autohotkey, development, wordpress — mhussein @ 5:37 pm

I wanted to add social networking buttons (del.icio.us, reddit, digg, …) like:
add to del.icio.us Digg it Stumble It! Add to Blinkslistadd to furladd to ma.gnoliaadd to simpyseed the vineTailRank
to the end of every post, There is no way to do it automatically as wordpress.com doesn’t support modifying the post template.

I found an ecellent post about this at sunburntkamel as I am very lazy (as most software developers) I have created a simple autohotkey script to do it for me.

The script prompts you for the url and the title then reads a simple template file adapted from sunburntkamel’s, and add the html code to the Clipboard ready for pasting.

you can download the script at socialsignature.zip This is a very simple script (I spent less than 10 minutes in writing it, most of that time writing comments, yes, I do write comments 🙂 whenever I can of course.)

Please tell me if you know a better way, or if you have problems or comments on the scripts.

  1. I know that you didn’t have newbies like myself in mind when you wrote this, but could you tell me how to run an autohotkey script? I get that it is basically an automated find and replace that will end with some code to be pasted to the bottom of a post, I’m just not sure how to make it run. Sorry to make you explain what must seem obvious…

  2. Me too … what do we do with the script if we have a WordPress.com blog?

  3. Hello

I am Lucy, I have found your website while searching for some info at Google. Your site has helped me in a big way.

    G’night

  4. To answer #1 & 2: You need the AutoHotKey program (it’s free) – http://www.autohotkey.com/

  5. I managed to run the script but had to manually enter the Permalink URL and the title each time manually into the Social Signature prompt. Is there any way for it to “grab” that info from the webpage directly? Also it didn’t respond well to Greek text 🙂

  6. There seems to be a problem with the above zip file “socialsignature.zip” – when I download it and try to open it with winzip it says it does not apperat to be a invalid archive.

  7. I can’t get it to download either. Just brings up a gazillion meaningless characters.

  8. Tried to download it as well, FileXoom doesn’t have the file it looks like. I’ll check the blog again another time 🙂 Looks like a really great script to use!

    Comment by A Villager — 13 August 2007 @ 8:45 pm

  9. Oh, just checked FileXoom’s front page announcements. They moved servers and have up to a 20 day delay on files being transfered to the new location. I’ll definitely check back in a week or so!

  10. Since I have plenty of unused bandwidth, I have hosted the file for you:

  13. At the risk of feeling like the one with the dunce cap on, I’m having trouble getting this to work.
    * I downloaded autohotkey
    * I downloaded the scrip

What *exactly* do I need to do to activate/use this functionality?

    Thanks–

  14. You will want to install AutoHotKey and associate it with the scripts (I think it does this by default).

Extract the script and other files into its own directory. Double-click on the “social.ahk” file.

That will put AutoHotKey in the system tray.

Find out the complete address of your blog entry. If you have already published the entry, it will be the Permalink address for it.

If you haven’t published it, you can manually input the “Post Slug”. So, if you were to create an entry titled “This is a test post”, you can enter something like “test-post”, or the typical auto one “this-is-a-test-post” into the Post Slug box.

The rest of the address will be your blog address and the date. If I was to do the above example right now, the complete address would look like this:

    http://abbydonkrafts.wordpress.com/2007/08/23/this-is-a-test-post/

Once you have the complete address, right-click on the AutoHotKey icon in the tray and choose “Social Signature”.

In the first box that pops up, enter the complete address as explained above.

In the second box, enter in the title you want to be used when someone chooses an icon. I use the format “Blog Name – Blog Entry”. For the example given, I’d enter:

Random Ramblings – This is a test entry

After that box is confirmed, the complete code will now be in the clipboard.

On the Write Post page, make sure you are in the Code tab. At the bottom of the code, add a couple of blank lines. Paste in the social code with CTRL+V.

Now, you can see the results by Saving or Publishing. The Visual tab shows them as all crunched together, but the blog theme probably doesn’t display them that way.

If you want to modify the way it’s displayed, such as adding spacing characters like “::”, you can edit the script and add them after the /a tags.

  15. Wow. That was long. Also, I meant:

For the example given, I’d enter:

Random Ramblings – This is a test post

  16. Hi,

The script is no longer on filexoom. I clicked the link and got a page with the following message — amongst other things. What to do?

    Server Issues
    Posted on 08/02/2007 06:09PM

We currently just moved servers, and are working on moving all files over to the current server. All users should now be imported and be able to log in. If your files are not there, please be patient as they can take up to 20 days to transfer!

If you need your files faster, please email support (at) filexoom (dot) com with your email address and we will try to import your files soon.

Once again we appologize for any innconvience, but we are trying to provide the best support for our customers.

  18. Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you make the images bigger and separate them?

    Comment by jdavey — 31 August 2007 @ 2:59 am

  19. You can’t make them bigger. If you did, they’d be distorted. You can replace the references and point them to your own if you want. You can edit the template.txt file and do what you want to it. To separate the images, such as with “::”, just add it in between all instances of:

    <a ..

    Comment by abbydonkrafts — 31 August 2007 @ 4:02 pm

  20. Dang.. that didn’t work. Let’s see if this does. Add any spacing between all instances of:

    </a><a ..

    Comment by abbydonkrafts — 31 August 2007 @ 4:03 pm

  21. And to clarify, you want to put the spacer inbetween the brackets, like this:

    </a> :: <a ..

  22. When I try to open the social.ahk file, I get a message that Windows can’t and needs to know which program created it. I did a websearch, which didn’t help. Can you help please?

    Comment by officechairuk — 1 December 2007 @ 6:36 am

  31. Same problem as 25,29 and 30. Is it a Visa issue?

    Comment by inzax — 2 December 2007 @ 11:06 pm

  32. Ok, it was not working for me as 25,29 and 30 also stated. I went to the folder containing “socialsignature”. This is the file containing the social.ahk file. I left clicked on the file and selected the option “compile script” This produced a icon in the same folder called “social.exe”. Clicking on social.exe produced an icon in my menu bar. Right clicking on this icon gave me the option to select “social signature.” Once I did that I followed the instruction pop ups and had the items on my clipboard when I hit “ctrl-v”.

Someone more learned then myself can explain why this works.

    Comment by inzax — 2 December 2007 @ 11:21 pm

  33. sorry…right click on the social.ahk file NOT LEFT CLICK.

    Comment by inzax — 2 December 2007 @ 11:33 pm

  34. Hi Mamado & everyone. I’m back again (comment #30 above). I thought I would clarify how I have now been able to get this to work.

    (1.) Install AutoHotKey
(2.) Extract the “social.ahk” file from its .zip file (I did not follow this step!)
(3.) Right-click the “social.ahk” file and then click “Compile Script” on the pull-down menu. This will create “social.exe”
(4.) Now double (left) click “social.exe” to put it onto your system tray
(5.) Follow the rest of Mamado’s instructions in comment #14 above.

Thanks, Mamado for this great tool!
And thanks, Inzax, for helping me find what I was doing wrong.

  35. Clarification:
Step (0.) Download AutoHotKey (see comment #4 above) and socialsignature.zip (see comment #10 above).

  47. hello, mamado and everyone.
i just tried your script and placed it in one of my blog entries. thanks very much for sharing this.
but when i tried to do a test- bookmark of my blog entry in delicious, instead of my blog’s url, what appeared in the url box (of delicious) was “http://xxURLxx/”. i tried to bookmark using the reddit and stumbleupon, among others, but since i’m not a member of these bookmarking sites yet, i was taken to the sign up area.
would be helpful if someone can help me figure out what i did wrong.
    many thanks. 🙂
oh btw, i modified the script a bit because when you hover the mouse to one of the buttons, what appeared was “xxTESTxx”, thus i replaced all these with the names of the sites corresponding to the buttons. thanks again.
